The Bel Canto line was a USA-made boutique horn built on a custom valve section fabricated by Dick Akright and with bells made by John Duda, who was at Kanstul at the time. These trumpets were all personally play tested by Doc before going out the door, and they were most notably used by Doc himself, Maurice Murphy (London Symphony), Donald Byrd (hard bop trumpet player), and Greg Adams (Tower of Power). The Bel Canto design is incredibly versatile and lives up to its name, “sweet singing”. This trumpet has a pure and vibrant sound with incredible projection and a bright edge to it.

This particular trumpet is from the earlier years of production, dating to early 1990. It is a model 59, which is the large bore version. The bore size measures .462”. The serial number is the date of completion, stamped on the 2nd valve. I believe they only produced about 2 horns per week, and over the ~10 years of production, less than 1200 horns were made. This trumpet had a valve rebuild by Mark Metzler in 2023. The valves are in like-new condition. All slides work with fast and reliable action. There is a little bit of red rot in the tuning slide, but a custom MK Drawing NY Bach tuning slide in raw brass is also included with this horn.
